Gravimetric Blenders

Precise mixing and dosing of individual granulate batches

Gravimetric batch blenders from Digicolor are used to reliably mix free-flowing granulates, regrind, masterbatch and other additives in the desired proportions. After the mixing process, the produced granulate mixtures are further processed on injection moulding machines or extruders. A gravimetric batch dosing device, called batch blender for short, can be installed in different ways: either directly on the processing machine or next to the machine (injection moulding machine or extruder). Another possibility is to install the dosing system at a central position in the plastics processing. In this case several processing machines are supplied with the granulate mixture from there. Based on specifications of the respective application, we will design the optimum gravimetric dosing solution for you.

Function of gravimetric blenders

The desired granulate components are first fed or conveyed into the metering hoppers provided for this purpose. Precisely operating metering gates then ensure that the individual components are successively metered in the desired quantities into the weighing hopper. This hopper is connected to a precise weighing system. When the weighing of a material batch is complete, the entire mixture (also called batch) falls into the so-called mixing chamber. There it is uniformly mixed by a mixer blade. All components in contact with granules are made of stainless steel in standard.

A level indicator mounted on the outside of the mixing chamber monitors the entire mixing cycle. A user-friendly handheld control system is used to parameterize and operate the gravimetric blender. Cleaning and maintenance of the hoppers for the individual components is very easy. Batch blenders DGS Nano, DGS 0,5 and DGS 1,5 are equipped with the Easy Clean System. That means that all dosing hoppers can be removed without tools. In addition, material receivers or feeding units do not have to be dismantled in order to change dosing hoppers.

Gravimetric blenders are usually fed with an automatically operating granulate conveying system (vacuum conveying system). If the batch feeder is installed directly on the processing machine, the finished mixture trickles directly into the feed opening of the plasticizing unit. If the mixing system is installed next to the machine, the finished mixture is conveyed from the batch metering unit to the processing machine by a granulate conveying system.

Control of gravimetric batch blenders

The control of the gravimetric dosing systems is extremely user-friendly. The hand-held control unit can be plugged in from one unit to the next in a Plug&Play manner. For this reason, the operator theoretically only needs one control unit for several gravimetric batch dosing units. Furthermore, a recipe database for various mixtures is included as standard in the control unit for gravimetric batching. All units are equipped with an Ethernet interface. This enables the units to be networked to a central visualisation system. With this visualisation, many batch blenders can be supplemented with process data acquisition for storage and traceability of the processing data.

Product programme of batch blenders

Digicolor offers an extensive product range of gravimetric feeders for a wide variety of throughputs of plastic granules, measured in kg per hour (kg/h):

  • NEW: DGS Nano for small material throughputs up to approx. 20 kg/h
  • DGS 0,5 for material throughputs up to 50 kg/h
  • DGS 1,5 for material throughputs up to 200 kg/h
  • DGS 5 and DGS 10 for material throughputs from 350 up to 1.800 kg/h
  • DGS 25 for very high material throughputs from approx. 1.000 up to 2.750 kg/h

All units are characterised by high processing quality and easy cleaning of the stainless steel components, e.g. the dosing hopper. Gravimetric blenders can be designed as a stand-alone unit or individual solution for a processing machine or as an integral part of a central material supply system.
